A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit 6km south of Alberton and roughly 16km southwest of Central Johannesburg at 02:38 on Sunday morning.
Residents in Laudium and surrounds woke up to trembling. They took to social media to share their experiences of being awoken by their homes shaking.
The shocks were felt across the greater Johannesburg area reaching as far as Middelburg and as far south as Vereeniging.
No immediate reports of injuries to people have been reported.
