8000 food hampers have been distributed to the Mooiplaas / Spruit informal settlements in Centurion - Thanks to donations from the Tshwane Muslim Community and the Sutherland Ridge / Ikon Park / Westhills business communities.
The Gauteng Social Development Department, City of Tshwane and law enforcement approved the distribution in line with a new directive, that distribution should be coordinated and approved.
Scores of SAPS, SANDF members and TMPD officers have been in attendance since early this morning.
People have been gathering since 6am for food hampers and at times the queue was about 3km long.
Social activist Yusuf Abramjee said coordination of the distribution went of smoothly. Social distancing was practiced for most.
“We wish to thank all the roleplayers and the community for the joint effort.”
“The need for food is massive. Over 80% of this community are foreigners and they have not received any assistance from government. “We are happy we made a small difference.” said Abramjee.
Business leader Smiley Essa said he was happy that the 8000 food hampers will be feeding tens of thousands of people. “We are looking at ways of expanding the aid over the coming days to neighboring areas.”
Asgar Akoob of the United Muslim Forum said “a lot of work still needs to be done and thanked the various donors & volunteers. The lockdown is far from over and levels of hunger are growing by the day. Let’s continue to make a difference wherever we can.”
