Baking school equipping Laudium’s unemployed

Students graduated this past week from The Knead Bakery, a project of the Al-Fidaa School of Baking in collaboration with the Light of the Needy.

Started on the 4th of October 2021, the school offers women a one-week basic introduction and if the competency levels are achieved they will graduate onto the more advanced four-week home bakers’ course, which gives them key skills required to start a home-based baking business for free to the unemployed in the community.

The pioneering idea behind these classes is to train underprivileged and unemployed women in the art of patisserie, and provide them with expert baking and decorating skills. Up to eight students can enrol for each course which runs every four weeks, from Mondays to Fridays.

“What an amazing initiative. The bakery school sells it’s products baked by the students to self sustain the project. Please support The Knead at 217 Second Avenue. Laudium.” Hafsa Bhika Carim of the Laudium Women’s Network who was in attendance at the opening said.

“We all love it when a plan comes together, especially when it’s a plan against poverty.” Director of Light of the Needy Saleem Hassan Mia told Laudium Today.

“The Empowerment School has plans for future expansion for IT and Sewing Classes as well and look forward to partnering with the Community on these Projects.” Saleem added.
