In a significant development, Ward 61 Councillor Naeem Patel is acting as the City of Tshwane Speaker for today, Thursday, June 26, 2025, as the council considers a vote of no confidence in current Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana. This appointment is a notable honour for our local councillor, reflecting the trust and support he's garnered from various parties, including the ANC, ActionSA, EFF, PA, Good, and PAC of Azania.
The motion, brought by the Democratic Alliance, is being discussed in a council meeting presided over by Cllr Patel. This isn't the first time Ndzwanana has faced a motion of no confidence; in July 2023, ActionSA filed court papers citing concerns about his leadership and adherence to democratic principles.
The outcome of today's meeting will determine the fate of Ndzwanana's speakership.
Even Councillor Prajay Ramjee voted for Councillor Patel to act as speaker, further solidifying the support for Patel's nomination.
Councillor Naeem Patel emerged victorious, defeating Councillor Paulus Muthimunye with 114 votes to 81.
This marks a first for Ward 61, with Councillor Patel becoming the first councillor from the ward to be elected as acting speaker of the Tshwane Council.
