On Tuesday, 25 June 2024, the Embassy of the State of Palestine hosted a reception to welcome inspiring young Palestinians participating in the "Butterfly Souls Tour," dedicated to honoring the children of Gaza during Youth Month. This tour, organized by Shamsaan, is joined by local Pretoria women’s organizations deeply involved in the Butterfly Souls Campaign, including the Artillery Art Group, Pretoria Muslim Women's United, the Light From Many Lamps Counseling Centre, SAVA, Women Without Limits, and the Laudium Women's Network.
Led by Zain and Yazan, sons of the late Al Jazeera cameraman from Gaza, Samer Abu Daqqa, the tour will travel nationally, including stops in Cape Town and Durban. Samer Abu Daqqa tragically lost his life while documenting the aftermath of an Israeli bombardment of a Gaza school in December.
In tribute to his father, Zain is collaborating with South African artists and has partnered with the Windybrow Art Centre in Hillbrow to produce a unique music project blending traditional Palestinian music with African influences, under the direction of Sibusiso Shozi.
Zain will debut his collaboration with the Windybrow Junior Choir at the Nelson Mandela Foundation during the inauguration of the Butterfly Souls Memorial Wall, honoring the 16,000 children killed in Gaza on June 27th. With Shamsaan, Zain will also participate in SA’s largest youth festival, Basha Uhuru Freedom Festival, presenting at the Creative Conference and the Sounds of Freedom Concert on June 29th, featuring his song “Yabba,” dedicated to his father, alongside Cape Town-based Afro Jazz band, Kujenga.
