Celebrating Legends Recognised at the Naeem Patel and Family Matric and Community Excellence Awards
Honouring the Legacy of Zuleika Alli
As part of the Councillor Naeem Patel and Family Matric and Community Excellence Awards ceremony, several community legends were honoured for their lifelong contributions to upliftment and service. Among those remembered with great admiration was the late Zuleika Alli, affectionately known to many as Julie or “Aunty Julie.”
Originally from Pietermaritzburg, Aunty Julie was a talented teacher who lived a life dedicated to service and compassion. In her younger years she enjoyed sport, particularly tennis, and was known for her vibrant personality, love of music, laughter, and her ability to bring people together regardless of race, religion, or background.
Her commitment to the community was remarkable. She volunteered at the Laudium Advice Office, chaired the Laudium Women’s Association (LAMWA), served as a local ANC councillor, worked as a Lay Assessor at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court, and was also involved with the Laudium Women’s Network (LWN). Beyond these roles, she was known for her kindness and generosity, often tutoring children from her family, neighbourhood, and wider community without expecting anything in return.
Councillor Naeem Patel shared that he had the honour of working alongside Aunty Julie in the 1990s. On many occasions, food would be collected from her home to assist families in need. He also served with her on the ANC branch executive committee in 1994, recalling her dedication and selfless spirit.
Above all, Aunty Julie was a devoted mother who nurtured not only her own children but countless others who crossed her path. Her legacy of kindness, humility, and community service continues to inspire many.
The world, indeed, needs more “Aunty Julies.”

The award was presented to Dr Razia, daughter of the late Julie Alli, by Haseena Azmuth
