South African hospitals remain under pressure as over 15 000 Covid19 patients are currently admitted in clinics across the country urging many people to seek homecare, either for a lack of beds at hospitals or if a patient could be adequately cared for in a homecare environment. Though with a shortage of oxygen and equipment, and with no resources to obtain them, Covid19 homecare is a far cry for many care facilities.
An old age home in Gerhardsville has taken steps to ensure their residents are protected, the home has now been equipped with two portable oxygen concentrators courtesy of Jacaranda Athletic Club and sister club Phobians.
“We are helping this community stay on its feet and its most important that you be able to do that. It’s a little gesture from us, we hope it goes a long way,” Grahame Gertsch, Phobians Chairman.
The concentrators were donated to Huise Oase on the 07th July 2021 after a request for assistance with an oxygen concentrator was sent to Laudium Community Care by the home’s management.
While the home had requested only one machine, the club was able to donate two machines.
“A very big thank you for this kind gesture, its guys like you that make it possible to look after the people. Thank you so so much, we really appreciate it,” said Fanie Vosloo of Huise Oase.
Portable oxygen cylinders are the only way for patients in a serious condition to keep breathing at home when they can't find a hospital bed.
“I’m glad that we were able to help, and that Jacaranda and Phobian’s Running Club came quick, I think you guys (Huise Oase) asked for one machine and they doubled what you asked for. On behalf of Laudium Community Care I say thank you to Phobians and Jacaranda and thank you to you guys for knocking at our door,” said Laudium Community Care’s Naeem Patel.
Jacaranda believes communities are indeed stronger together and that most South Africans are committed to making a positive contribution to support each other.
