The Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit in South Africa has received the green light from the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) for crucial upgrades, paving the way for a potential Formula 1 return to African soil. The iconic circuit, which last hosted F1 in 1993, is set to undergo a series of safety and infrastructure improvements to meet the FIA's Grade 1 standards.
Kyalami's owners have been given a three-year window to complete the necessary upgrades. With competition from other African projects, including a proposed street circuit in Cape Town and a new track near Kigali, Rwanda, Kyalami's owners are eager to secure their place on the global stage.
"Kyalami's FIA approval is a defining moment for South African motorsport," said circuit owner Toby Venter. "We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil." With the FIA's approval, Kyalami is one step closer to realizing its vision of becoming a world-class venue and a beacon for motorsport across Africa.
