A bright star from Laudium has shone brightly in the medical field. Dr. Kiara Ramjas, born in Laudium and raised in Centurion, has been awarded the Dean's Award for Outstanding Achievement in the School of Medicine at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU). This prestigious award recognizes her exceptional academic performance and commitment to compassionate service.

Dr. Ramjas graduated summa cum laude from the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) program, showcasing her intellectual brilliance and dedication to humanity. Now a first-year intern at Tygerberg Hospital in the Western Cape, she credits her success to a disciplined study routine, peer collaboration, and family support.

Growing up in a home where empathy was a way of life, Dr. Ramjas was inspired by her father's work in healthcare and her mother's advocacy for persons with disabilities. Her close relationship with her sister, who has Down syndrome, instilled in her a strong sense of service from a young age.

Dr. Ramjas's passion for medicine was ignited during her high school days when she volunteered at a local clinic. The experience of caring for patients in a holistic and respectful manner convinced her that medicine was not just a profession but her purpose.

As she embarks on her medical career, Dr. Ramjas remains committed to her core values of empathy, excellence, and service. She aspires to become a pediatrician and join Doctors Without Borders, driven by her desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives. "Children are the legacy we leave behind," she says. "Being a pediatrician means safeguarding the health of future generations. That's a privilege I want to earn."

The Laudium community can be proud of Dr. Ramjas's remarkable achievement, which exemplifies the caliber of graduates SMU strives to cultivate – individuals who combine academic rigor with compassion and use every opportunity to uplift others.
