As part of the legends honoured at the fourth annual Matric and Community Excellence Awards hosted by Councillor Naeem Patel, one of South Africa’s most respected legal minds and human rights activists, Justice Jody Kollapen, was recognised for his lifelong contribution to justice, equality, and community service.
Known by many as the “Quiet Giant of Justice,” Justice Kollapen’s journey from apartheid-era Pretoria to the Constitutional Court of South Africa stands as a powerful example of resilience, humility, and principled leadership.
Born Narandran “Jody” Kollapen in Lady Selborne in 1957, he grew up during one of the darkest periods of South African history. Raised in a politically conscious family, his values were deeply shaped by his parents, particularly his mother, Thanga Kollapen, who participated in anti-apartheid resistance campaigns and the historic 1956 Women’s March.
Like many families affected by apartheid’s forced removals, the Kollapen family was relocated from Marabastad to Laudium under the Group Areas Act. These experiences exposed a young Jody to the harsh realities of injustice and inequality, experiences that would later shape his commitment to human rights and constitutional democracy.
Justice Kollapen began his legal career in Pretoria in 1982, focusing on public-interest law and defending political activists during apartheid. He worked on several significant cases, including the Sharpeville Six and the Delmas Treason Trial, earning a reputation as a fearless advocate for justice.
Beyond the courtroom, he played a leading role in civil society through organisations such as Lawyers for Human Rights, where he later served as National Director. He also chaired the South African Human Rights Commission, becoming one of the country’s strongest voices for equality, accountability, and constitutional freedoms.
Despite his many achievements, including serving as a Justice of the Constitutional Court, those who know him continue to describe him as humble, approachable, and deeply connected to ordinary people and grassroots communities.
Throughout his judicial career, Justice Kollapen has consistently championed human dignity, fairness, and access to justice. His judgments have reflected compassion and a practical understanding of the challenges faced by vulnerable communities, particularly in matters involving education, prisoners’ rights, and constitutional protections.
At a time when society often celebrates status and power, Justice Kollapen’s life serves as a reminder that true leadership is rooted in integrity, service, and humanity.
His recognition at the fourth annual Matric and Community Excellence Awards not only honours his extraordinary legal career, but also celebrates a son of Laudium whose legacy continues to inspire future generations.
