Athletes from RunXtreme Athletics Club delivered outstanding performances at the prestigious Two Oceans Marathon this past weekend, showcasing determination, consistency, and endurance on one of the world’s most iconic race stages.
Widely known as “The World’s Most Beautiful Marathon,” the event attracts thousands of runners annually to its challenging 56km ultra marathon and 21km half marathon routes around the Cape Peninsula, with breathtaking scenery and fierce competition adding to its global appeal.
Among the standout performers was Hilton Phukubye, who delivered an exceptional run in the 21km half marathon, finishing in a superb 1:24:07. His performance secured him a top 110 overall finish, top 101 in the men’s category, and an impressive top 83 in his age category, earning him his fifth silver medal at the event.
Equally impressive was Alita Swanepoel, who took on the demanding 56km ultra marathon and crossed the line in 5:54:08, achieving a highly respected sub-6-hour finish, a milestone many ultra runners strive for.
Adding to the club’s achievements was Mohamed, who demonstrated remarkable endurance and mental strength by completing both races over the weekend - the 56km ultra marathon on Saturday followed by the 21km half marathon on Sunday.
“We are incredibly proud of our runners. Hilton’s consistency at this level, Alita’s strength in the ultra, and Mohamed’s resilience across both races truly reflect the spirit of our club. These performances inspire not only our members, but the wider running community.”
At the elite level, South Africa’s long-distance star Gerda Steyn once again claimed victory in the women’s 56km ultra marathon, continuing her dominance at the event with another commanding performance. The race also saw top international and local athletes competing at a high level in both the ultra and half marathon events, reinforcing the race’s reputation as one of the premier distance running events globally.
As a community-based club, these performances carry special meaning, highlighting what can be achieved through commitment, support, and a shared love for running. Moments like these continue to inspire fellow members and encourage more people in the community to get involved, proving that big achievements can come from humble beginnings.
