The Tom Jenkins Challenge is one of the most popular races on the AGN calendar. What gives this race a unique fun-filled atmosphere is that running clubs compete for the ultimate prize of being the most largest and jolliest bus over the 10 and 21km distances.
This year the race formed part of the Pretoria edition of the Vitality Run Series, and was the fourth and final leg in the series. The Vitality Run Series was started by Discovery to encourage people towards living an active lifestyle to improve their health.
A highlight of the race is the notorious climb up Meintjieskop on Tom Jenkins Drive, an 800m stretch that offers a 180-degree view over the suburbs of Rietondale, Riviera, and Villieria. The road was built by Italian Prisoners of War during the Second World War, and is named after a former mayor of Pretoria.
RunXtreme members and novices came out in their numbers to support the event. For many, the race was their first attempt at a 10km. The atmosphere and camaraderie was memorable. Thank you to our members for continuing to inspire each other to reach their running goals.
