Motorists travelling on the N14 and R511 roads have been advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution whilst travelling on these roads following numerous attacks.
In the latest incident, a motorist whose vehicle had broken down on the R511 between Diepsloot and Erasmia on Wednesday evening was accosted by seven assailants, assaulted and robbed of his belongings. The injured motorist sustained moderate injuries following the attack and was hospitalised at a nearby medical facility.
Meanwhile, police have increased patrols on these routes in an attempt to prevent further attacks. Erasmia police Station Commander, Lt. Col. Thandi Mokgoetsi has urged motorists to refrain from picking up hitchhikers or stop along these routes unnecessarily in order to reduce the risk of possible further violent attacks.
A warning has also been issued to travellers using OR Tambo International Airport following numerous robberies of travellers after being followed from the airport. Travellers have also been advised not to write their physical addresses on luggage tags as this information appeared to have been used during recent robberies.
The public are once again being urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the SAPS via the police 10111 emergency number.
