Plans for a new community dedicated to dignified ageing have moved forward with the soil-turning ceremony for the Golden Age Village in Raslouw on 5 September 2026.


The World Memon Organisation (WMO) Africa Chapter and the National Awqaf Foundation of South Africa (Awqaf SA) are behind the planned development, which will comprise 52 homes designed to provide older residents with independence, community and access to support as their needs change.


The development is being built on land endowed by Awqaf SA to WMO Africa in 2019 as a waqf, a permanent charitable endowment intended to benefit communities across generations.


At the soil-turning ceremony, almost 50% of the units were taken up or pledged, following a presentation of the project to community members and stakeholders.


The planned homes will include six three-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units, 10 one-bedroom units and 24 studios. The village will also feature a Musallah, lounge, restaurant, library and salon, with facilities designed to encourage family visits and community interaction.


An early childhood development centre for 24 children is also planned at the entrance to the village, allowing grandparents living in the village to remain close to their grandchildren during the day.


WMO Africa Regional President Ahmed Gani said the project aims to create a community where older residents can remain independent while receiving support when required.


“Our aim is to create a community where older community members can remain independent, receive support as their needs change and stay close to family life,” he said.


Awqaf SA Trustee Haroon Kalla described the development as more than a construction project, saying it represents an effort to create lasting social infrastructure for future generations.


The development plans include independent water infrastructure and 24-hour security, while the project team is also pursuing a formal partnership with Raslouw Private Hospital. Hospital CEO Dr Iftikar Ebrahim and Director Dr Ismail Mitha have pledged a dedicated Health Waqf to support the initiative.


The project will operate under a proposed share-block model, with purchasers acquiring shares linked to a right of occupation while the underlying land remains waqf. Donor-funded studios are also planned to provide accommodation to eligible beneficiaries.


According to the project team, the Department of Minerals process has been completed and the Conditions of Establishment approved. The Surveyor General’s plan and municipal services agreement are currently in progress, with further township, engineering and building approvals still required.


The team expects the remaining regulatory processes to be completed by March 2027, after which construction can begin, subject to the necessary approvals.
