The Pretoria Legacy Foundation (PLF) hosted a virtual meeting on Monday 28 June 2021.
In attendance, a diverse group of concerned local organisations and role players whose objectives were to express solidarity, offer support and co-ordinate efforts to curb the further spread of the Corona pandemic.
It was agreed at the conference that the PLF would issue a statement to the community to intensify its efforts in combatting the virus.
The foundation therefore calls on all citizens to vigorously comply with all the lockdown regulations and take all necessary precautions.
Our appeal to fellow brothers and sisters is to change our behaviour and attitude to comply with the non-pharmaceutical interventions of wearing masks, social distancing and the frequent washing or sanitising of hands.
The PLF also appeals to all residents who qualify, to get vaccinated and to do so speedily and in an orderly, and safe manner. We call on members of the community not to heed to the unsubstantiated chain messages of conspiracy theories that abound about the vaccines.
The PLF also commends the efforts of local aid organisations who have so selflessly assisted the community in these trying times.
In this regard, the foundation would like to echo the call of some organisations for households who have previously received oxygen canisters or machines to please urgently return these to the organisations, as there is a dire need for them at this time.
The PLF is very alarmed at the high number of deaths being recorded in our midst and calls on the community to take extraordinary measures to protect themselves and their families.
The foundation has also been informed that the current crisis is placing a severe strain on many people and families and that depression and other anxieties are prevalent. The foundation is trying to facilitate and coordinate increasing counselling in this regard.
The PLF has also undertaken to provide effective leadership during this crisis and has pledged to guide and act as points-men during this difficult time.
In this regard the foundation will endeavour to provide as much information and communication as possible and will intensify its efforts to provide effective strategies to assist the community.
A number of active strategies are being planned and will shortly be put in place.
At the last virtual conference, about 70 community and religious based organisations, stake holders, role players and individuals participated in the discussions.
A list of all those participants is being annexed to this statement.
The PLF has in the meantime began to process a database of all community, cultural, religious and aid organisations in the area so that an effective coordination effort can be maintained and deployed.
We once again thank all those concerned and involved in our community activities for their sterling efforts and continue to work with all of them going forward.
We appeal to all interested parties and individuals to join our initiatives. You can join our WhatsApp group or Facebook page or provide your details to be included on our database.
