A DA-supported march held in Laudium on Tuesday has raised questions among residents about the political party's involvement, the timing of the protest and how representative the demonstration was of the local community.
The march centred around allegations of drug-related and other illegal activities at an establishment in Laudium. While the DA says its involvement was motivated by concerns around crime and community safety.
The DA claimed that hundreds of people participated in the march but could not provide a breakdown of how many participants were actually from Laudium or Ward 61.
When asked whether supporters had been transported into Laudium for the march, the DA also did not provide a clear confirmation or denial, instead insisting that attention should remain on the alleged criminal activities which prompted the protest.
Questions have also been raised about the DA's leadership and its previous involvement in Laudium. Some residents have pointed out that DA Mayoral Candidate and former Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink was, according to their recollection, never seen visiting Laudium during his time as Mayor of Tshwane.
Others have also questioned about former Captain Anil Palladh, who is now the DA candidate for Ward 61, and his time as station commander at Laudium SAPS. Residents have questioned why alleged drug dealers, whom they claim continue operating in the area, were not dealt with during his tenure as station commander.
These questions have added to concerns among some residents about whether the DA's current involvement is purely about community safety or whether political interests and the upcoming local government elections are also playing a role.
The DA has strongly denied that its involvement is politically motivated, saying its focus remains on community safety and ensuring that SAPS investigates allegations surrounding the establishment.
Ultimately, allegations surrounding any establishment or individuals remain matters for law enforcement authorities to investigate and determine whether any criminal activity has taken place.
For residents, the focus remains on ensuring that allegations of crime are properly investigated and acted upon regardless of political affiliation.
